Although Mark Cavendish did go on to win the 2011 UCI Road World Championships, the reason why this jersey has the rainbow bands of a former world champion is he won the World Madison title with Rob Hayles in 2005.

He rode for the Isle of Man in the scratch race, lapping the field with three others: Rob Hayles (ENG), Ashley Hutchinson (AUS) and James McCallum (SCO). Hayles then led him out for the sprint to win gold for the Isle of Man.
