An early example of the US Postal team jersey from the 1997 from Ultima with Trek and Bell logos.
Manufacturer: Ultima Sports Wear
Associated Bike Brand: Trek Bikes
Although the team did not have any stage wins during the 1997 Tour de France, they did finish all nine riders. Russian champion Viatcheslav Ekimov was the team leader (he`d previously taken stages at the Dauphine Libere and Paris-Nice that season) but `Eki failed to delivery during the tour - as did the team`s other overall hope Jean-Cyril Robin. Veteran bunch sprinter Adriano Baffi, who did to his credit make it all the way to Paris, secured 10th place in the green jersey competition.
Lance Armstrong never rode for US Postal Service team during the 1997 season, it was this design of jersey that Lance held up in a press conference when they announced he had signed for the 1998 season.
I recently watched Stop at Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story" (which is excellent by the way) and on there it was claimed that Thomas Weisel got Armstrong to sign a pretty measly contract for 1998. Armstrong got his own back by efficiently going after every win-bonus written into his contract!
