When carrying out some research into the riders that took part in the 1981 Giro D'Italia, I came across some archive photos of Giovanni Battaglin in a beautiful Inoxpran/Pentole Posate jersey.

1981 was before the start of my interest in cycling, so it's also perhaps too new for a 1980's jersey to be considered "retro".  As previously mentioned on this site, the 1980's was the tipping point of the adoption of polyester sublimated jerseys, however before this happened, manufacturers made some big advances in production techniques in order that they could correctly (and cheaply) represent shapes, logos and lettering on jerseys, bib shorts and other cycle clothing.

One such technique is called flocking – sometimes referred to as flocked lettering – which is used extensively on this very jersey.

Flocking was often used when the final design was too elaborate or complex for embroidery.  The end result feels like felt to the touch, but the process involves covering the jersey with small fibre particles (called flock) onto the surface of the garment which was stuck on with adhesive.

This jersey is in perfect condition, however, you'll often find many jerseys where the flocking has come away from the garment due to repeated wearing/washing.

Also available online is the Giro D'Italia pink leaders jersey from 1981 - also signed by Battaglin himself!
